Exercise and motivational programme for liver transplant patients

Can an exercise and motivational programme improve quality of life for liver transplant patients?

On Wednesday 28th May 2025, we hosted a webinar with guest speaker Ashlea Hargreaves about the ongoing trial: Home-based exercise and motivational programme before and after liver transplantation: The ExaLT Trial.

The research

Researchers want to find out whether implementing an exercise and motivation programme could help to improve the quality of life in people who have a liver transplant. They also want to see if this can help other factors including mental wellbeing, physical fitness, and length of hospital stay.

They are doing this by asking patients to complete an exercise and motivation support programme made by physiotherapists both before and after receiving a liver transplant.

The impact

Patients who took part in this programme said it helped them to manage their anxiety about having a transplant, feeling more prepared on the day of their liver transplant. They also reported feeling more confident about their ability to exercise while managing their conditions and being active after their transplant.

What next?

The trial is now in its final stages and a full report of the findings will be produced.

A recording of this webinar will shortly be available on our website.
